I agree, me being amongst the lot.
You will probably find this funny but now we're in 2008 and some gov offices in my country are still using Dell optiplex gx100 with win98.
I'm talking about this

maybe whoever is in charge of IT will migrate them to Xp or directly to Vista.I In any case i will keep on using Xp for a very long time

HI,
In spite of my opinion that I stated above about moving on to newer OS's like Vista, I still own two laptops that run XP Pro. They will remain XP machines. It would be silly for me to change them to Vista since they run XP so well.

I was a very early XP user. I started a few months before SP-1 was released. So, XP is really home for me. But, I like Vista very much. I did not know this when I built my new computer and decided to install Vista. It was a risk. Now, I'm glad I did.

Please don't misunderstand me. I really like XP. It's a great OS. But purchasing a new XP is not an issue for me; it won't happen again. However, I certainly will miss MS support for XP when that comes about. I assume the 3rd party software companies will continue to support XP for a long time since there will be a large customer base. But it will gradually dwindle and so will the software. All of my new application software will definitely be Vista (and XP) compatible.

HI Beast,
Yeah, I had a couple of programs that would not run on Vista. One I never got to run so I use it on my laptop on XP. It is a programming language to custom program my Pronto touch screen remote control. I called Philips about the problem and they said, since my remote control is obsolete, they have cut off support for the software. Bummer, but I won't lose sleep over it since there is a work around.

The other one, the most important one (of course) I was able to get to run on Vista using the XP Compatability Mode. As suggested by the software publisher, I had to install using the XP Compatability Mode and even create the desk top short cut in Campatability mode. When it starts it resets my monitor resolution to 600 X 800 and the color depth to 8 bits. Since this a high resolution topographic mapping program it looks absolutely terrible. But I can fix the display problems by simply readjusting the display properties in the Control Panel. But the next time I run the program it does the same thing. No way around it.

So, all in all, my Vista conversion was not too painful (other than having to download a bunch of drivers).
