I can easily recommend ESP and Ibanez guitars as a first guitar. At least my MH-250 is a great bang for the buck.

I've had Ibanez recommended to me an awful lot by friends. Virtually everyone I know who plays guitar has claimed to either own or have once owned an Ibanez. So far I'm swaying towards them. What model would you guys suggest? I know the SA120 has already been mentioned. Is that any good?

Maybe check out ESP as well http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=66642

I dunno how good their 'budget' stuff sounds, but it'll almost certainly play well
The Pacifica's are really good, the 012 was my first guitar!

Best thing you can do is try some out, really!
What feels right for one person may not for another, do you have any guitar shops near you? Or any friends that have any?

The SA120, is a really good priced guitar, I gets good reviews too;

The Ibanez SA120EX electric guitar is packed with features yet highly affordable. It is a versatile guitar with tones for rock and metal styles. For the warriors who demand a different feel to their weapon, the SA can be the sword of choice. The SA has an S shaped, comfortable body, but with a flat back.
Rock & Metal, the two tones you said you were after!
Not to mention, it looks pretty good!

I don't really have a budget (just got paid, booyah!) but at the same time I'm not looking for something ridiculously expensive. Value for money is my first priority.

Bear in mind that I suck I've been learning acoustic for 6 months and that blows so I figured I'd stepped things up. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
Dude take it from someone that plays on and off, dont buy something nice. Just get something that sounds decent and doesnt break the bank. If you dont stick to it youll be wasting your money.

Same thing I was going to say. You could also look into getting a starter pack that comes with everything you need. (granted, the guitars aren't the best...and neither are the amps...or anything else, but hey, they're STARTER packs after all).

I really wouldn't recommend a starter pack. You do find packs with squires, and they're good guitars (I own a squire tele), but owning a guitar you've really searched for will make you want to play it more, and ultimately you might get into it.

Do consider ebay though, you'll get so much more for your money.

I also have a feeling the washburn w165(??) was really highly praised in a mag a few years back.

There's no doubting its spec is miles better than anything else mentioned here - those pickups belong on a guitar worth twice as much. If you can stretch it might be worth it - hell, checking it out again now I'm tempted...

They're good, quality guitars.

They make all sorts, no just 'shredder's. Semi acoustics and the like
I know you like your strats, Craig!
