Exclamation WD HDD Trouble...

Hey guys as you may see in my sig, I have two HDDs. One is the 20GB one and the other is a WD800JB (80GB). Just this morning, I ran across a problem. While browsing the net my cursor froze and in fact the entire PC did so as well. Then I was forced to reset the power. After that...the HDD failed to boot approximately 6 times. IT failed to be recognized as a HDD and either did not spin up or span up and shut down. At the seventh try, it finally booted fine. I have run dignostics and there's nothing wrong with the surface of the HDD. I fear that it's dying on me. Could it have been something else?

It could be dying, how old is it? Have you used WDs diagnostic program? And are you sure your power supply is working ok?

Default Yeah.

I have indeed used the WD diagnostics and run all the test without any problem being found. The HDD is approximately half a year old. It could be my power supply as well. It's just strange that I never had a problem like that before.

I suggest that it's a power cable problem. I had this problem before, the power cable disconnects and the hard disk stops getting power and when I reset the computer, it is not detected unless I play a little with the power cables.

I will give it a week and see what happens. I have actually played around with the power cable prior to finally getting it to boot. Maybe you are right indeed. However, it can also be dying on me. Well I have a 3 year warranty on it so I may as well give it a week or two to see.

Ok, I'm with narafa then. It's most likely a power connector problem or power supply

Good luck then and hope the electricity don't shut off

You can make something nice, they sell power cables splitters in which you can connect it to a good and working power cable and get 2 or 3 cables. You can buy one of those splitters and stop using this power cable connecting the 80GB HDD.
