Yesterday my P4,1.8, running XP Home started turning itself off and on. I cannot use the computer. I turned it off till this morning and it still goes off and on.
I sat there and watched it and timed it. I turn it on, and after 2 minutes it cuts itself off, 45 seconds later it turns itself back on. Two minutes on, 45 seconds off, two minutes on, 45 seconds off. Windows XP will open and just before it ready it dies. I thought it was a Windows problem so I hit F2 and the system started to get into SETUP, and I was looking at the options, and at the two minutes mark, the system died again, so it's not just a XP problem, it also cuts off in DOS. 2 minutes off, 45 seconds off. I'm using my laptop at work now to ask this question..... HELP |

Have you done any overclocking?
It could be a power issue, can you try a different power supply?

This is my wife's computer and the problem just started yesterday. She had left her PC on since we have a T1 DSL, and we were eating lunch, and we both heard her PC shutdown, and about a minute later it came back on, and off and on, etc.
This is strange. Nothing was done to her PC, it has not changed in almost a year, been working normal and great til yesterday. HELP , because now she's on my computer............. |

Click Advanced tab. Click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Under System Failure uncheck Automatically Restart. Click OK. This won't cure your problem, but instead of restarting you'll likely get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) instead, the information displayed will allow you to trace your problem, or post it here! If you still get the system rebooting and there is no BSOD then it's likely that your processor is overheating or your PSU is faulty. Try checking the system health in the BIOS for the processor or system temperature. You'd like it to be less than 50d Celcius, anything over 75d is running dangerous. I pulled the suspected problem power supply and it seems dead. I plugged it in after I pulled it and the fan does not run.
I have an old, smaller PSU that I had saved several years ago and plugged it in and the fan did run so to me it proves the old PSU has died. Last night on EBAY I bought another, faster PC, so I hope to swap hard drives and run the newer pc. If it works, I'll have time to find another power supply to fix the old PC for a spare. If it does not fix my problem I'll be back here for more help. Thanks to all..... |
