Angry Ubuntu graphics getting worse?

Is it just me or are the graphics in every release of Ubuntu just getting worse and worse? The graphics in 7.04 were pretty good, a lot of stuff in 7.10 was worse... the only thing that actually looked good was the default wallpaper. Then 8.04 came out and it looks AWFUL!!! The wallpaper looks like a heron swimming in the mud, the icons look old fashioned and the color theme isn't orange enough. Sure, I've fixed it by using NuovoXT 2 icons, elementary windows borders, a new wallpaper, and fixing the control colors, but first impression is important and it would be nice if the user didn't have to fix the interface. I'm afraid to see this "new look" in Intrepid...
