Default restart and shutdown takes ages

problems with programs not responding then i would try to kill it with taskmanager but it wont kill then if i were to open firefox instances it would stay on the tasks so if i open 4 instances there will be 4 firefox.exe that wont kill manually or auto then when i want to restart or shutdown it would take anywhere from 5-10 minutes probably waiting to kill all those tasks.

Is it the same program all the time that hangs, or is it random?
Are you running any network tasks at the time? sometimes this has affected my pc if the host pc gets disconnected or rebooted, it then hangs other progs.

Try the usual.... virus scan & spyware scan.
Also when they hang, Ctrl/Alt/Del them & endtask, then if no response still try it again and press the enter key a few times or the spacebar after doing the endtask.... works for me sometimes.

it is better to kill using a knife.....i mean by ending the processes rather then pressing end task since the latter takes more time to close the application properly.

when you find the offending task, uncheck it from your startup list in msconfig...
