Default Sid Meier's Pirates - Won't run!!!

I recently got Pirates and am really keen to play it. I installed it, but when I hit the icon to run the exe I get the hourglass icon for about 1/2 a second then nothing! I got frustrated last night and just kept hitting the icon repeatedly until I got an error message saying that there is a problem with iexplore.exe and it has to restart the application. It then refreshed all my task bar etc.

My pc specs are:

AMD 1.06ghz
Geforce 5200 128mb
256mb ram
XP Pro

I have uninstalled and reinstalled without any virus software running (in fact without anything running) and still no joy. I have installed the v1.01 patch of the game - still no joy.

Can you help?

I dont understand why a game would cause a problem with iexplorer.exe unless you use this game online in which then it may cause a problem with it. But I dont think Pirates is totally online based game.

Default Pirates

Thanks for your reply Hell breather,
Maybe the iexplore thing is something to do with me repeated trying to open the game and nothing to do with the game.

Is it possible there is a conflict with xp? if so...would heaps of users have problems? What sort of thing would make it just not respond like this? Could it be clashing with some other application? or could it be a virus?

I doubt that, the game is quite new.

A game crashing at launch is usually a driver related issue, what version are you running that FX5200 on?

Is it possible we could get the minimum requirements to play the game that might give us an insight in why the game crashes

The game isn't specially demanding and should run fine on his hardware.

I thinking about the RAM it's 256MB, usually a game will need about 512MB sometimes a game will fail to work if the RAM is not enough.
Just a thought

Games can run choppy during pagefile use but in this case it's not the lack of memory.

The system reqs for the games was, of course, the first thing I checked. My PC meets the specs easily.

FYI the reqs for the game are:

# Operating System: Windows® 98/Me/2000/XP
# Processor: Pentium® 1.0 GHz or higher
# Memory: 256 MB RAM
# Hard Disk Space: 1.2 GB Free
# CD-ROM Drive: 4X Speed
# Video: 32 MB video card* with Hardware T&L support
# Sound: Windows® 98/Me/2000/XP-compatible sound card*
# DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0b (included) or higher

I have 4.7g free on my HD, a 54X cdrom, 128mb card and directx 9.0
