Default Xubuntu 7.10 install problem

I have the Xubuntu 7.10 OS, Ordered the cd, Didnt download. It installs fine on my desktop but when i try to install on my laptop, it starts installing and halfway through i get a message "could not retrieve some essential files" and wont go any further. Running win-98se here and was told it should install fine. Thanks.

Hmm... How old is the CD? Does it have any scratches on it? If at ALL possible I would download the new (Hardy Heron) release. Often desktop drives can read scratched CDs better than old laptop drives so even a minor scratch could keep your laptop from reading a file. Also, If you do download a new copy I would recommend getting the Alternate Desktop CD because it requires less RAM.

Laptop specs?

While usually overly-friendly with most systems, there are a few laptops the Ubuntu family Live CD's don't play well with. As Irish said, you may wish to try the Alt CD.
