Default Backup Hardware & Software

I have an HP Pavilion dv9810 which has 3gb of memory and 160 gb of disk. What is a good hardware (disk) storage, software and I/O to use for backing up my pc? I know I an use restore points HP files backup utility and complete system restore but I want to use the config I mentioned. Is the 1394 connection better than the USB 2.0 port? What about the HP expansion port?

I currently have a 160bg SimpleTech portable hard drive connected via a USB port. The backup that I started 5pm yesterday is still running! It's close o finishing but......... Thanks
