Default building a usb hub

I want to build a 8 port usb hub for my PC. Can I just connect the sockets in parallel (i.e. All pin 1's on one line, pin 2's on another etc.), or do I need extra components?

Also, what is the voltage that usb ports give out? - I'm thinking that the hub may need to be powered, possibly from the 5/12V supply to the HDD etc. I can make a circuit to reduce the voltage if neccessary.
