Default laptop sound question

I have the logitech x-540 speakers. I want to use them with my alienware m15x laptop. The website says the m15x has

"7.1/5.1 Digital High-Definition Audio (8 Channel)"

Does this mean I won't need an external sound thing to take the full advantage of the speakers?

Here's a picture of the side of the laptop where the sound ports are, if it helps.

No they should work fine with the integrated card in the laptop.
If you want better quality you could by another card but what you have should be fine.

I mean, will my laptop sound using the speakers be the same as a desktop? What is this for?

Is my built in sound card the same as 5.1?

Your speakers are 5.1 and the laptop is 5.1/7.1 so it will work.
Thats for if you want a better sound card than what is intergrated into your laptop.
See what others say as well I'm not sure how much of a diffrence you would see between the intagrted card and that other.
