Default XP Upgrade and Vista Upgrade

So here is my situation:
Awhile back I bought the Windows XP Upgrade and I always kept a Windows 98 CD with me incase I ever did formats and reformats in order to save on the full purchase of XP at the time. To my dismay, I have recently lost the Windows 98 CD during a move and am now unable to install Windows XP Upgrade onto any platform rendering it useless (unless I can find someway to get another one).

Here is my question:
If I buy the Windows Vista Upgrade version can I use the Windows XP Upgrade version in order to install Vista without needing the Windows 98 CD? Or will it require me to put in Windows XP and then require me to put in Windows 98?

Any help would be great. Thanks!

you can do that... you need to have an actual OS on there... why not just buy vista?

Because that's $100 difference.

So, I have Windows XP Upgrade installed right now. If I buy Windows Vista Upgrade I will be able to install it.

Now if I wanted to reformat I wouldn't be able to use the Windows XP Upgrade CD when it asks for "Windows XP CD" when isntalling it fresh?

The way Windows XP Upgrade works is, you format a drive and then when you go to install it, it requests that you put in a prior windows CD and it will load stuff off of it and request that you put XP back in the system to complete the installation. Now without that Windows 98 CD I can't format and install XP.
But if I were to do the same with Vista, would it work to just put in the Windows XP Upgrade CD and have it read and install whatever it needed to install? Or would it not?
