Default What exactly do Power Settings to When I Plug/Unplug my Laptop

Would appreciate anyones help on this. I'm fairly computer literate but totally illiterate about Power Settings, especially if a laptop is plugged.

The way I understand it is, unplugged, the lower the power setting the more battery time you have. Is that true?

When its plugged in. do the power settings make a difference in regard to computer speed, internet speed, etc?

Thanks for your help.

Default ...

you pretty much have it figured out, when the laptop is not plugged in you should try and turn down some of the settings to get a better life span out of your battery, if you are goign to have the laptop plugged in for a while you can even take the battery out of the laptop and just run directly on the power supply, the will ensure that the battery is not always being drained or charged all the time and will give you a longer battery life in the end.

the power settings depend a lot on the OS and the laptop model. mine for example turns off 3/4 USB ports, the IR port, the bluetooth, and it also turns the screen brightness down, and the CPU speed down all when on battery power. i have complete control over this also, which is a nice feature

Default Thanks So To Clarify

Thanks for your info (Sorry for the typo on my title). To clarify, the Power Setting when plugged in, even if its set on minimum, has no effect at all.
When your running on batteries, the lower your power setting, the slower your CPU & other things diminished, but the longer the battery use. Is that correct?

I have XP, Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive.
