hey guys

i have thermaltake 1200 W power supply. and i got this ear ring for about 2 months which doctor told me it is caused by something like that and i need to work in quiet place. well i can hear my compter power fan from living room! it is pretty loud. so i HAVE TO make it quiet. what should i do ? is there any way to decrease a lot of its sound volume? or i have to change it ?

i'm using :
CPU , intel quad core q6600.
4 x 320 gb hard drive
sound card m-audio delta 1010.
mother board intel D975 XBX2.
4 GB ram.
VGA geforce 7600 over clocked.

P.S if i have to change it, maybe i can get another thermaltake power ( i mean i trade with another) , how much i decrease its power ?

So is the noise from the entire computer bothering you, or just the power supply?

If it's the latter, you have a couple options. One would be to replace the power supply's fan, but there's two problems with this. One, it'll void your warranty (on the power supply). However, I guess this isn't really a big deal since apparently it's unusable to you in its current state anyway, unless you're planning on selling it. Two, I don't know how much heat a 1200W power supply like that creates, which may be why it has a loud fan in the first place, i.e., a quieter fan might not cool it sufficiently.

Option two, which I would do, is to sell the power supply and chalk it up as an expensive lesson on buying foolish components. Your hardware doesn't need more than a decent 400W power supply, 500W if you want to be paranoid. Corsair and Antec are known for making efficient, quiet power supplies. Thermaltake is known for making things that sound like jet engines.

Well the last result is :
I have case front fan for hard drives, back fan. cpu fan , power fan and vga fan.
intrestingly the power is not making "annoying-noise" .It is the graphic card. I'm still surprised about it, I pulled it out and turned the pc on, and become sure that it is causing the main sound.
I go check what is wrong with "BFG, geforce 7600 GT OC".

It's indeed weird without a story, but nonetheless; you punch a hole in your ear and you put a ring in it and all of the sudden you get sick because of noise? Stop me from not believing but as far as I know punching a hole somewhere should not affect your hearing?

Ok fine, I doubt it if a smaller PSU will make less noise. Even better, I can say for sure it will not make less noise. This 1200W has to work at like a 30% load which is nothing, it hardly gets hot so basically the fan should not turn much at all. If you get a 600 watt it will run that system as well, but then at a 60% load causing it to heat up more then the 1200Watt PSU thus it will have it's fan turning harder thus making more noise.

My logic might be failing it sometimes does, but I believe I am quite correct here?

No. You're wrong on both counts. First of all, I'm pretty sure the "ear ring" the OP was referring to is tinnitus (a subjective ringing noise in the ear), a common ailment for people subjected to loud noises for long periods of time.

Second, Thermaltake makes noisy power supplies. A lower wattage power supply from a better manufacturer would be cooler and quieter. Your thoughts about percentages and how hard the PSU has to work are speculative and asinine.

OP, if your video card is bothering you, you could get something like this:

It doesn't make any noise and will cool your card better than the stock cooler.

And I never knew much about PSU's. To me it would seem logic that at 30% load the fan would turn slower then at 60% load. Sort of like most CPU-coolers do.

But don't mind my "foolishness"

Yes, at 30% the fan should in theory rotate slower than at 60%. The thing is, a 30% load for a 1200W power supply puts out just as much heat as a 100% load for a 400W power supply (in theory).

High efficiency (80+) power supplies make less heat, but a 1200W power supply isn't going to make any less than a more efficient power supply doing the same workload just because it's not being used to its full potential.

I'd reckon that when you run at your fastest for 1 kilometer will get you more heated up/tired then running half the speed for 1 kilometer. Does this not apply to PSU's ?
