Default File Protection

I am looking for a way to protect files from getting duplicated. I do not like emailing documents to customers in a Word or Excel file, when they can alter the document anyway they want or "steal" the document. In some instances I would like it if the documents could not even be printed.

Is there anyway to protect Word and Excel files?

Well you can password protect them so the can't be opened without the password. But other then that, no I highly doubt it. Once you give them the file you can't control what they do with it.

That sucks. In the digital age you would think this would be easy to solve. With so many people emailing important documents like contracts I would think there would be a way to protect against fraud.

If it is MS office you should be able to password protect it as read only and with out the password you can't modify the file. I would suggest googling it.
