Default WD Passport Issue

Looking for some help with a 160gb passport. I was copying some folders from my laptop to it and the laptop froze up. I had to do a hard reset and when i opened the hdd folder from my computer, it shows all empty folders but they are named correctly. There a few DLL files and a bunch of system folders and files that were not there. They have very weird names made of unusual characters. none of the folders open, it says that the directory is corrupt or unreadable and that the folder is not accessible. I would REALLY like to not lose the 130gb of music that i have on it. I use it as my itunes directory and i would love not to have to reload all my music back to it. Any help is much appreciated...

Go to RUN, CMD, and run CHKDSK (the drive letter). If the problem is software related, CHKDSK is usually quite good about repairing it. Let it go through its process and see what it finds.

Also, this might have nothing to do with the problem, but format your WD passport to NTFS. It comes defualt with FAT32 which is pain in the butt when trying to move large files over 4GB.

Yeah, I'm gonna "byte" the bullet and just reformat. I was finally able to check in all the folders and open files but all the songs were only a second long. not sure... At least i dont pirate music and actually have my entire collection on CD's...

That's good to know...and let this be a lesson for you. Never use a single drive as backup. My music, for example, is on DVDs, two external HDs, my NAS, and my desktop.
