My computer, running Windows XP Pro, will not shutdown or restart properly. When shutdown through 'Start'->'Turn Off Computer'-> 'Turn Off', it will it will say shutting down and then end up on a windows splash screen and saying 'It is now safe to turn off your computer'. It doesn't shutdown automatically like all the other indentical machines.
When I restart the machine through 'Start'->'Turn Off Computer'->'Restart', it will say 'Logging Off' and then 'Windows is shutting down'. That's where it will hang. I have had sit there for a half hour and nothing happens. I have: 1. Flashed the BIOS 2. Reimaged the system with a a prebuilt image (Symantec Ghost) 3. Clean installed Windows XP through XP CD (with full format) 4. Installed all windows updates(including SP3) 5. Checked Power Options in BIOS: After Power Failure: Stay Off Wake on Lan from S5: EIST: Enable Intel Quick Resume Technology: Enable Wake System from S5 6. Reset BIOS to factory defaults. 7. Checked Power Options in control panel: Power scheme: Home\Office Desk Hibernation: Enabled Advanced Power Management Support: Disabled Additional Information: The original issue with this computer was that it would randomly restart without an error message. I checked the event log and it did confirm an error but did not specify what. When I took the machine back to my office I noticed that there was an unknown device in the device manager with a device instance id of 'ACPI'. I could not get rid of the item until I did a clean install of XP. The issue of random shutdown was resolved, but now having proper restart and shutdown issues. There is no issues in device maanger now as well. This computer is a standard machine that we use and deploy to everyone in our Faculty. We have a pre-built image that we use to image these machines. Every identical computer has no problem with the image except for this one. Specs: Windows XP Pro SP3 Intel 965WH Processor Intel Core2 2.4gHz 2GB Ram 80GB Hard Drive ATI Radeon 1550 Any suggestions would be appreciated. It very well be a simple option that I am missing.
