Default Ipod not recognizing songs?

I plugged in my girlfriends 80GB ipod and used MediaMonkey (I don't have iTunes) and it showed all the music that is on her ipod. but when I unplug it (I safely removed it before unplugging) I was browsing around on her ipod and it said nothing was on it. I then plugged it back in and MediaMonkey showed all the music that was on it. Some 13GB of it. What is going on?

browsing ? you mean by going to "my computer" ? if am getting you right, music on IPODS are hidden. you have to enable hidden files, then look in a folder call IPOD_CONTROL, then MUSIC.
you will see a bunch of folders, yep the music are in there !!!

did i get you right ?

well for that you will definitely need itunes, you can do a format via my computer, or you can do a reset via your Ipod itself, but to reload everything factory you will need itunes

Ok when I have the ipod plugged into my PC, my PC shows all the music that is on the ipod. When I go to unplug the ipod and browse my ipod, it shows that no music is on it.

Does that make more sense?

Yes it does - no doubt it hasn't had the OS on the ipod reinstalled since you bought the ipod and it will probably needs updates so i say install itunes and restore the ipod OS and then go from there - this would probably be the cause of it!

I reinstalled the OS on the ipod and now it works but for some reason half of the songs are played VERY quietly and the volume control has no effect on those songs but the other half play just fine.
