Hey all, two days ago, on Newegg, I ordered a $16.99 DVD-ROM LiteOn Drive for my college PC. Don't get me wrong, its an excellent drive, very quiet. But what has happened to the build quality? I have 2 of the exact same model, made in 03/04, and they're much stronger. For instance, the DVD tray is so weak, the plastic flexes with the DVD on it. I am not too happy with the quality, but hey, at least I got a DVD drive on there now

We are a "disposable" generation. Instead of getting things fixed, we go and buy new ones to replace the broken ones.
It also has to do with the speed of technology. By the time something breaks, there is something new and better out there. So they make things cheaper to compensate ... ![]() |

yeah, based on that. they make things more cheaply and easier to break so that at one point it Will break, and you will go back to them and buy another, therefore instead of just selling you something once, they will have 2 (or more) of their products bought by you.... its just how it works...

I've never had much luck with Lite-On devices... I had an old DVD-ROM some time ago and it never worked very well. Then my first DVD-Recorder (a Lite-On) died after about 3 months of light use.
Unfortunately it's difficult to find a really "good" brand anymore because so many brands are simply OEMs. If I'm not mistaking (probably am ), Sony drives have been both Lite-On and NEC drives.
