Windows 2000 Constant Automatic Shutdowns
My roommate uses Windows 2000, and, for some reason, his computer restarts every two hours. I have tried everything to fix the problem, but I still can't figure it out. He gets the standard 60-second countdown timer before his system restarts, and no settings that I change seem to do anything. Perhaps there is some setting or EXE that I am not aware of that is responsibe for all of this.
Please help ASAP! I'm trying to transfer a very important and somewhat urgent 180 Gigs of data to his computer over a 10 MB/S LAN, so we can't afford the constant restarts. Thanks to whoever that can help. Last edited by AmanIsDude; 04-21-2005 at 04:05 PM. |

I agree, I think it was sasser that gives you the countdown, you can stop the countdown by going to start/run then type shutdown -a, then you can run your updated virus scan on the machine.

I have tried a virus scanner, and results always seem to turn up negative. The network requires that we use Sophos. It's not the best scanner in the world, but it does the job.
The "shutdown -a" command doesn't work in Windows 2000 unless you download the program seprately, which we did. However, it doesn't really help much, since we have to keep coming back to the computer every two hours to abort the shutdown. (The file transfer is probably going to take about 9 hours to 2 days according to my rough estimate.) But thanks for your responses. Your on a network?... I know there is a shutdown utility from Microsoft that is made for remote network shutdowns by admins, (i use it). Try unplugging the network cable and see if it still shuts down, at least you will be able to take a network based intrusion out of the question...

Haha, thanks a lot for your help! The link that Greg J. sent seems to have hit the problem on the nail, since I think there might be a "system failure" message that also pops up. Hopefully it'll fix the restarting problem. Now I just have to figure out why there are system failures every two hours. ^_^"
I know that the shutdown is initiated by some program in WINNT/SYSTEM32, but I don't quite remember which one. As for the network thing, I don't think it's initiated by a remote terminal or server, since I believe it has occurred when the network was down. But it's worth a shot if GJ's suggestion doesn't work. Again, thanks a lot! ^_^ ^_^ |
