Would this cooler work on a Q6600? I'm just asking cause I don't see Intel Quad Cores listed on the compatibility list except for the Core 2 Extreme Quad.

Yes it's compatible. The heatsink uses the same clip system intel stock heatsink uses.

Another question, is it necessary for me to get an Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound to spread on my cpu before putting on my artic cooler 7? Is it highly recommended or is it not really necessary?

you'll get a few degrees lower, but it wont make a night and day difference. it's up to you if u want to spend like $10 shipped for that much lower
