Default ...and the quest for a new laptop goes on...

Well I've been thinking of getting a laptop for quite a while, but it seemed that they were all out of my budget, and I almost gave up all hope...until I came across Eee PCs. Nice-looking machines and decent specs, while they lack some basic features I almost fell in love... but today morning it happened that a Harvey Norman's brochure fell on my feet when I picked a newspaper from last weekend, and on the first page - ACER ASPIRE AS5315-201G08MI 2GHz celeron M, 1gb ram, 80gb HDD and Vista Home Basic (which I'd dump anyways...) only $498 after cashback! And I thought "Woot, nice machine for the price, though it's ugly as and looks identical to my mom's, but considering my budget I should STFU about that..." well, now there are a few questions I need to ask:

1. The CPU - I understood that it's a single-core Core2 w/only 1mb cache. Is this right? I'm not looking at an ancient, rotten NetBurst celeron or something like that am I?

2. What do you think of it? I'd really like to keep the budget below $500, and it's just below that, so it seems like the "perfect machine"... but if it's a *poop*box, I'll just forget aobut it.

...and that's it. Performance-wise it batters Eee... and costs only $50 more, so I thought it'd be a nice machine... if it's a piece of <cencored>, tell me, but otherwise all I want to hear is a reassuring "nice find, go for it!" because I really want a portable PC for school but have some trouble deciding what to put my money on

P.S. I just realised that about 70% of what I wrote was completely unnecessary, including this statement. Why am I even writing this, then? Pfft...must be one of those days...

I might come up some weird, new questions later on today.

Yea but I was asking if it (the Celeron M in the rig) is/was based on the Core2 architecture, i didn't mention duos nowhere (I think...) and I do know that celerons are singlecores... and I think it'd play games way better than my current 866mhz P3 (I'll whack every person who starts giggling at my uber monster ). The machine will be used for lightweight gaming (mostly pre-2004 games, see my "buncha questions about Eee PCs" thread for examples if you're really that curious ), and I do believe that comp would run them just fine.

More reassuring, confidence-boosting comments, please

What do you mean by $498 after cashback? Is there a mail in rebate or something? Also, where abouts are you located? If your in north america you could probably get a better deal than that.

For example, if you were in canada you can get pretty much the same thing with twice hard drive space for the same price.

http://www.thesource.ca/estore/produ...roduct=2510301

And that is from the source, you could probably find a better deal if you look elsewhere.

Otherwise, it's an alright computer capable of doing what you need it to do, so if there are no better deals where you are, then I'd say go for it.

Keep looking, I've seen dual core systems out there for $500 with bigger hard drives and more features.

Oh okay. So, budget is $500 AUD(Australian Dollars!), I might be able to put in another, say, $20 bucks or so but no more, unless they're offering some kinda cashback (no, wait, it's called rebate ). Must include shipping & such if need be (I'd really love to actually go to the shop where I'm buying from) for around $500 or under, there can't be too many options, so I'm not going to list any specs... but I do prefer performance/features over looks/battery life, and portability is not much of an issue, as long as it's a "laptop" or "notebook" of some kind, it's portable enough.
