Default Adware

I'm using Vista SP1 and have just experienced my first unwanted ad displayed prior to shutting down my PC. Can you help resolve? Thanks

Is this a popup type ad while browsing online or something that persists afterwards while not having an IE window or other browser like FireFox, Opera, Netscape open? For cleaning things up the free version of AVG now includes a security toolbar addon as an option to the IE 7 that will automatically prompt for removing adwares and browser hijackers. It lacks a popup ad blocker while offering a screening tool. http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe

Having just replaced AVG 7.5 here on Vista running SP1 that was a welcome tool when a search result ended up on a page trying to see a trojan installer downloaded on the spot. AVG's protection blocked that long enough to close out the IE window. While browsing however one trick many sites do now is script ads right into the page where any popup ad blocker becomed ineffective until you click on the X button to close those out.

The best move may be to add some additional adware/spyware protection if you currently are not running any program. Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2007 and Spyware Terminator work well together for seeing additional layers added on. Ad-Aware with a working Ad Watch feature with the full retail version is seen at http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Spyware Terminator adds a protection around the system registry like a firewall and cleans more spybots and data miners over Ad-Aware even and is free at http://www.spywareterminator.com/

Run a good sweep with these to see if that will clean that up. The three have been in use here for some time with the AVG 8.0 having just replaced the 7.5 version and have managed to keep Vista here bug free.

Download, install, and run AdAware.

It sounds like a typical popup generator being left behind where these programs generally work well for cleaning them up. If the problem persists despite the scans performed with this combination I'll have ceewi1 come in to advise you further on some special tools and logs you would need to post to see a stubborn bug removed. But give them a good run since they work well for most.
