Default Linux offline...

SO, I was thinking of installing Linux on another $h17box (a.k.a. "My Own Computer"), since I'm gettting a little tired of 98SE stuffing up on me. But Linux (well, at least ubuntu) seems very "internet-dependent".. I can't figure out a way to download updates so that I could just burn them on a CD-RW or copy them on my portable HD, and I couldn't just download WINE (have to do some console-stuff to install it straght off the internet...I assume this is how it goes with many programs) is there a way to download the stuff ("Linux-software and such") I need, so I could just transfer it on the compy without any kinda internet/LAN setup? Also, obviously I can't have it solve dependencies automatically because the comp's got no internet... how can I find out what "dependencies" the package needs to have fixed up before downloading, and how to do it?

^All above summarized:
"HOW/WHAT DISTRO TO INSTALL ON A COMPUTER THAT'S GOT NO INTERNET and what to do to make any use out of it?"

i know what you mean bro, i once asked the same question way back.
But one distro i can think of in head right now is Sabayon Linux
it kinda has nearly everything off hand... then there's PCLinuxOS has a few programs and codecs by default.
so you might check them out

hope somehow this helps

You could also ask a friend who has an internet connection to borrow it for installing a Linux operating system. If they say yes take your computer over and use the internet connection to install.

^ That'd mean that I'd have to move the bloody machine to "my friend's place" every day. Plus, we've got inernet at home anyway... the problem is, hooking my compy up to our "main" computer (the one with the internet) would be such a massive project, it's almost not worth the effort... really, I only need to find a way to make use out of linux without having the computer connected to the net...

ahh yea I read it alright, I was referring to 2GB's post... there's practically no way I could have internet on the comp we're talking about here. I'll get Sabayon ASAP, though. Do you think I should get the CD or DVD version...?
