buying a domain name ?

i want to purchase a domain name but i really have no idea what im doing so i was hopping somebody would know how to go about this/ has done it befor

just give me some info on how it works and what the different options are etc...

i have looked on Google and i get lots of different registration sites
but what i don't understand is how they can all sell me the same domain name

is there anyway to independently buy a name that isn't already taken ????

im soo lost so any help would be really appreciated

also could somebody explain weather hosting is included in these sites and how i would host it by myself if i did use one of these sites ?

ok so i looked thought that its very good

but what i still don't understand is were i should buy my domain name from and how more than one website can offer me the same domain name

i mean they must buy that name of somebody else right ???

because i would like to buy the name outright rather than off one of the websites

is this possible ?

When you buy a domain name from a website, they register the URL to the server where your files will be.

What exactly do you need it for? A website?

its for my photography
for my clients to view
some were that i can host my portfolio
and the images i take at events

im already in contact with a designer.

so if i had a server that i could register a domain name to it wouldn't cost me ?
that is if the domain i want isn't already taken, which its not
