Default Intel Core 2 Quad Motherboard

I have a question.

I am thinking of the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450, 1333mhz, 2.66 ghz.

I found the an Asus motherboard for it - the P5E3 - see link below

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131276

The problem is that Asus has taken it off of its site, which cannot be a good sign. The reviews also say this. Should I go with another motherboard?

How do I know if a motherboard is compatible with GeForce 8800GT or GTS and whether it will operate in SLI mode?

Also what are the PCI x 1 slots and the PCI x 16 slots for? Some motherboards have three x 16 slots but no x1 slots, and some have 2 of each. What is better?

Sorry for all the questions. I am a newbie at building my own computer.

Hey man, I am actually in the same boat that you are in. (we'll was) I posted a similar post, however I was more interested in SLI - Compatible mobo's. I was told to go with a 680i board or a 780i. Now I am not sure of your budget but... I was looking to build something that would last me a little while, and as games become more advanced I would add an additional video card. Here is a link to the 680i SLI boards http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ption=680i+Sli

The board I went with was a 780i.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scription=780i

I went with the EVGA, however I have heard great things about the XFX 780i

I believe the 780's offer 3 PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots for a "TRI-SLI setup"

So basically what are your goals for the cpu itself? straight gaming? movie editing? a strictly leisure computer?

As far as SLI compatible boards I would search new egg for SLI and than weed out the additional products by using the search feature.

As for the PCI-E 1.0 compared to the 2.0 x16 I am unsure about them. I dont really know of anything I use that requires a regular 1.0 pci slot, and I think it maybe a useless slot now that everything is going 2.0? However!! I am a 5 on cpu building (1-10) and I know only the bare essentials. So hopefully someone else could help you out, or maybe you found your answer here in my reply.

hope this helps

PCI-e v2.0 or v1.0 doesn't matter if you're getting a 8800 series card, they won't perform different. They won't take the extra bandwith that the PCI-e x16 v2.0 gives, they won't even use 100% of the v1.0

Though that Q9450 is hard to get running on a 680i because it's a Penryn which had problems. Easiest is to get a 780i... Or ofcourse a 680i with a Q6600 (and overclock it a bit to 2.7Ghz), ot you can ofcourse take a Q6700 which is about on par with the Q9450 (0.5% less good, you won't notice) only it's cheaper 40 dollars atleast?
