Default It's time

My PC desktop is like 4 years old now, and it has served me well. I don't play too many PC games these days, I play much more on my console.

However, come September is a game that I have been waiting for, for like at least 10 years to come out. Fallout 3!

So, I am just going to be building a new PC between now and August, most likely will start seriously looking in July since I don't want or need to spend the money right now. My budget is adjustable, but I would like to keep it under $1,000. I am also in the market for a new Monitor as well. Oh and I have a HP business class laptop for sale too, that I no longer really use.

I was thinking of building this:

Core 2 Quad Q6600$200
I like this because it boasts 8MB of cache, 4MB for each dual core. I know that Quads aren't fully supported or taken advantage of yet, but with that much cache, the thing would hardly page out to memory.

Nvidia 9800GTX$300
This I am on the fence on, not sure if I want it that bad or not. Plus I mean from what I am reading it isn't super above the last gen 8800GTX, and the price difference is about $100 give or take. Thoughts on this one?

ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard$120
I won't be running SLI, but I do like the 650i chipset, and it supports what I need it to do. 8gig of RAM, 775 socket processors, etc.

Antec PSU, one of the 650w true power models$100 to $140
What can be said about Antec? The fact that I have been using them for over a decade and they have pretty much never failed me once, says that I am probably going to stick with an Antec. Probably get the 500+ watt range, and get the best bang for my buck when I build.

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
$80
This stuff is $40 for 2GIGs right now! I am just going to buy 4 gigs of it, since it is that freaking cheap. It is insane!

SAMSUNG 2253BW Black 22" 2ms(GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor $300
Had a full lab of samsung LCDs at my old job, in the animation lab. Their support is nice and their product is good. Not sure if this is the one I want, and it is a bit pricey, but I can't seem to find a good HDMI supported LCD monitor that has a response time less than 5ms.

Optical/storage/caseguessing total for all around $200ish

This will be the best deal I can get at the time. Not sure if I really want to splurge on any high speed drives like a raptor. Probably just get some OEM SATA2 drives with high capacity. Actually I need several since I will be converting my old PC into a media center and file server. Optical, I will just get the cheapest OEM DVDRW drive. Case, I have cases lying around, but I could buy a new one. I may just buy that from the local computer store so I can see it in person.

Right there puts me around $1,000. With out the case/optical/storage. However, I can buy some hardware in July and some in August.

I would recommend this ram instead.

It's the G.Skill 2 X 2GB, so you can upgrade later. Plus it's cheaper cause it's free shipping .

the timings on those arent very good, i dont think they would allow for very much overclocking. its possible to find 4-4-4-15/12 2gb sticks around

EDIT: this is 80 bucks too, except its two sticks, its timings are still 4-4-4-12, and its freakin Patriot Viper! the heatsinks are great, and its cheap. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220293

oh and also free shipping

Know you like Antec but this is a good deal with a rebate.

oh and i just saw in the combo deals, there is a nice 680i in there for $20 less! if your reluctant to use a p35 then thats the route i would go, instead of 650i like you posted.

and with these upgrades to higher density ram and better motherboard, add it up and its the exact same price. W00T

Well, it looks like I may hold off. It has just been brought to my attention (by a forum member) that PC makers are finally adopting EFI technology, which is about freaking time. It also seems that Microsoft has finally added some support for it, via Vista SP1, which is also about damn time....

Now I am conflicted!

Well, you've waited this long. If you're okay with MSI (I doubt you are), they'll be releasing their P45 boards with EFI in July. Hopefully others follow suit with EFI sooner than later.
