Default TMP File on a Flash Disk

I have a Compaq laptop and use a memory stick (flash disk) on a regular basis when I switch between my laptop at home and my desktop at work. In the last few days every time I close a file on my memory stick it seem to create a TMP file. I keep deleting it, but every time I reopen the flash drive the TMP file has returned. How can I get rid of them permanently? I've done virus scans on my memory stick and it is fine, but this TMP file thing is starting to annoy me. Any info?
