Default The Great Firewall of China

Anyone know why so many sites are blocked in China? I can't get on Blogspot, YouTube or the Hotmail site. I know there's alternatives i.e. proxies like HotSpot Shield but those lag my internet slightly because the speed of the internet in China isn't exactly the best either. Anyone?

I saw a TV article about this, was focused on the bloke who stopped the advance of a column of tanks on 5 June 1989 in Beijing.
