Just bought a USB server hub and been told I simply have to plug it into the Netgear wireless router via one of the ethernet ports and away I go. No joy. Do I need to set up the router in order for it to recognise the USB server hub and items that I connect to it, such as printers, storage devices etc.?

Do you mean you attached a network hub to the router via an ethernet cable? If so, a hub is simply a "dumb" device which forwards traffic on all ports. It won't be seen by the router.
