Question windows 98 boot problem

i got a computer form a friend, it was an old dell deminsion r500 and when it booted it would ask for a password that he didnt know anymore and we could figure out what it was. Then i was on another fourm and someone told me to take the dime size battery out of the motherboard..and when i turned it back on it just went to a black screen and asked for a password. i cant boot in safe mode either. i dont have a disk either i think im out of luck. Is there anyway to fix this...get a new hard drive maybe??

You have to unplug the computer, unplug the CMOS battery and set the BIOS jumper to reset. Plug in the unit and turn it on for 5-10 seconds. The unit should show a blank screen. Unplug the computer and set the BIOS jumpers back to normal and replace the battery. It should have reset the BIOS and the password. If that did not work, find out the manufacturer of the BIOS and find some master passwords for the BIOS. The password is not related to Win98 or nothing it is a system password.
