Default WinXP not Automatically Installing Devices

Hey there. Haven't been here in a LONG time. But anywho, to the question.

I'm pretty good at figuring out most things, but this has me stumped. For a long time whenever I plug in a device like a mouse or keyboard, which SHOULD install automatically without my intervention, now every device I plug in asks me if I want to install it and where the drivers are. This shouldn't be happening, especially with PnP devices!

Help?

Have you checked it plug and play service is enabled? It might have gotten disabled from a trojan or similar. Type "Services.msc" in the run box and hit "enter". Scroll down and look to see if its enabled. Which devices have asked for drivers?

Yup plug and play service is enabled and started. Anything I plug in. Mostly annoying for USB mice and keyboard since they should NEVER be doing that, and you can't install drivers without having the mouse/keyboard enabled to navigate to install it!

Have you tried a simple system restore point? You may be infected or a setting/registry got changed somehow and a restore would change it back. How long has this been happening?

Ya, Mark has no idea whats hes talking about...

I am having the same problem and its driving me nuts

I tried cleaning the inf cache and still nothing... (this fixes it for vista, i don't know what its not working in XP).

however maybe it will work for you

try going to C:\windows\inf\ and deleting the infcache.1 file (this is the file that tells windows were to look automatically for driver files)

this should force windows to rebuild the cache and hopefully find your drivers

let me know if it works...any other idea please?!? this is driving me crazy
