I bought a Linksys wireless router a few months ago to connect my downstairs internet connection (in my house there is only a connection downstairs) to my upstairs, where I had just built a new computer (Btw, the P5N-D is working out great). But, to my disappointment, none of my online fps games worked! I have 786 kbs dsl; it used to work great, but now even on my wired computer (connected through the router) it is slow! Is this normal? When I log onto a server in CSS, I get my usual 55 ping, which before this worked like a dream, but now it acts as if it is at 500 ping! I get around 2-3 fps! If there is no way to fix this, I am considering running a very long Ethernet cable to a new router. Which wired router is best for gaming and is not very very expensive? Also, all of my download and upload speeds have remained the same; around 40 kb per second down, and 17 up.
Thanks. |

I looked at a D-Link Gaming Router this morning and it seems pretty cool and it has the best reviews out of all the D-Link routers.

If someone connect with wireless its normal that you down/up speed will be decreased. The sent package will be destroy UP TO 40% of the time in the air. The router need to resend information and that will decrease the speed.

There's no such thing as a gaming router. It's a marketing scam, don't waste your money. All they do is make a big fuss out of the QoS features that other routers have anyway.
I have a $40 Linksys wireless G router and don't have any lag. I'm not sure what your problem is, but unless you have a defective unit, it's not your router. For reference, I have a WRT54GS v7. It's the mainstream model. |

Exactly. The only difference between "gaming" routers and other routers is that by default they are set to prioritize game packets.
Not that it makes much of a difference if you only have a few PC's on your network, but once those packets hit the internet then the QoS is basically tossed away, as no packets have priority over the internet.

exactly, Qos is defeintely not even slightly an issue if you have one or two computers on a router. check the signal strength. some times the PC's wireless driver or the wireless adapter can be bad. try downloading the latest version.
turn off all other downloading programs like torrent software. FPS is usually linked to the graphics card being slow isn't it? what is your hardware like? I would probably have a look at the driver of your wireless adapter firstly. Last edited by gkeepleft; 05-24-2008 at 06:41 AM. |
