Default Desktop with Network problem

So, I have a 3 year old Sony Vaio desktop that cannot get connected to the internet otherwise everything runs fine. Since it was under a circuit city warranty, I let them deal with it. Finally after 6+ service calls and 3 motherboards replaced, I demanded a new PC. They sent me desktop but it is a HP. The tech's replaced the motherboard because i guess the NIC card is built into the motherboard.
They told me that if they don't collect the Sony, it's mine. So, my question is, can I buy NIC card or Ethernet card and take up one of my PCI slots, install the software and get back on the internet?? The sony will be primarly Internet/entertainment only. Right now my Sony is just being a big black paperweight.

Agreed. Technically you went through 3 NICs total... and now the 4th. This is no coincidence. This lies either in your cable, router, or DSL.
