a proxy server usually applies rules to users accessing the internet, kind of like a router's firewall. a proxy server covers all of the people on the LAN. A proxy server is generally connected straight to the modem. A proxy requires 2 netowrk cards.

a normal server generally offeres a variety of services to its clients like mail, web hosting, files etc.
