Just about any computer can do for basic needs, my 5½ years old P4 works wonder with basic needs.

It depends what your basic needs are, whether you want to build or buy prebuild and what your budget is.

Ya, any brand core 2 duo will do basic needs without any problems...

Are you looking for pre-built ? are you willing to build it yourself ?
What is your budget ?
Do you only need the computer or more (monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse) ?
I assume basic is surfing the web, doing some basic stuff like Word, Excel.
