Default Last one, I promise...

Ok, ok, I know you all are probably pist-off at me because this is like my 6th thread about this, but I still really need some help, and that is the reason I joined this forum... Ok, I'm still having major dual boot issues and XP issues, and I have a good idea. My idea is to totally erase the 2 HDDs in the ps in my sig, and divide the 200gb drive into a 100 gb partition for ubuntu and a 100gb partition for XP, and make the 40gb a shared file drive. I think this is possible, but after googling some howto's I am very confused, so first:

1. I need to uninstall XP and Ubuntu. I know I need to get a magical jellybean keyfinder, and have found the website link, but there is one problem: that PC doesn't have internet yet. Can I somehow put it on a flash-drive and install it on the other PC?

2. If I do get the keys, do I just format the xp drive in ubuntu, and then boot of an ubuntu live cd, and format the ubuntu drive to uninstall the OSs so I could re-install them later?

3. On a bunch of different howtos on google, I've heard a bunch of stuff about having to make a "swap" partition for dual-booting ubuntu and xp. On 1 tutorial, it said it can be 512mb. On another, it said it has to be twice the size of my ram. All I understood from these tutorials was that the xp partition can be the normal xp file system, and the ubuntu partition is the normal ubuntu file system, but the swap partiton has to be something like "linux-kernel version x" file system, and the partion for files shared between ubuntu and xp has to be fat32 or NTFS. Is any of this right?

4. On ubuntu's GRUB bootloader, how do I get it to recognixe XP?

5. In order to re-install both OSs and set up a real doul-boot configuration, do I have to do anyhting else I didn't list?

I'm sorry that this is my 6th thread on this, but I really need help, and any would be appreciated.

Yes, you can. Are you going to use the product key from the other PC?

Yes, do that.

Install XP first. When you install Ubuntu, the GRUB bootloader will recognize and create an option for XP.

Format your partitions' with Ubuntu. Be sure to create a 95 (or so) GB ext3 partition, swap partition (double the size of the RAM installed), and a 100 GB NTFS partition for XP. Install XP first. I believe the Ubuntu CD has a partitioning tool (I don't remember - it's been awhile ), but, if it doesn't, use GParted seperately.

No problem.

EDIT: In order to have room for your swap partition, make your ext3 partition smaller than 100 GB - like 95 GB.

Talking

thanks SO MUCH!!!

but 4 more things(sorry!):
1. Should I put the swap partition on the 200gb drive with the os's, or can i put it on the other 40gb hdd?

2.How do I make it a swap partition?

3.If I want to use the 40gb hdd to store files for bothe os's, what do I have to do to make it possible?

4.What does the Swap partition do/what is it for?

also, I have been typing all my posts on the family pc b/c it is the only one with internet at the moment. So what I need to do is download the jellybean keyfinder on my flash drive and then install it from that onto the pc in my sig. But i figured out how to do that.

But still thanks so much, after this I prbably won't start any threads in the Operating Systems section of the forum for a while.

Put it on the 200 gig drive. Make your ext3 partition between 95-97 gigs, and the swap partition 3-5 gigs.

You should be able to select "Swap" as a partition choice. You're given choices such as ext3, ext2, NTFS, etc...Swap should be among those choices.

I'm guessing you would need to partition that drive as well. For Linux-only files, you would want to create a ext3 partition. For Windows, obviously NTFS.

It's synonymous with the Windows pagefile.

thanks guys, i just backed-up all my files, got all my xp and software keys, made a livedvd of gparted, and formatted both drives. I'm probably going to wait till i get internet in there to re-install the os's so that they will auto-detect the internet connection. or maybe not...

But still, thanks cf and cf members, i will try to leave you alone for a while.

*cough* unlikely *cough*
