Hello.
Recently, there was a power outage in my neighborhood. After the power came back on, I attempted to turn on my computer, and my computer started making rumbling noises. These noises have stopped(except for a few seconds on booting up), but now, my computer keeps freezing while performing simple tasks (usually involving Mozilla Firefox). I was hoping somebody could tell me what may be wrong with my computer, and how it would be fixed. Thank you, Guarinnd. |

What kind of Power Supply do you have? Actually, can you list all your system specs? Also, define 'rumbling noises' if you can - is it a humming? -grinding? - clicking? -something else? If you can pinpoint the area the sound is coming from it would be good, too; you don't have to open the case if you don't want to, a simple 'lower front' or 'upper rear' should do.

Just...wow. That's a lot of info ![]() Ok, grinding noise... I saw a Socket 478 listed there; have you had the system for long? When dust accumulates on the fans inside the case (or the Power Supply), they can spin lopsided and wear out the bearings, thus making noise when they spin. It's possible that's the cause and the power outage was just a coincidence. Have you ever opened the case and dusted out the inside? It could also be a Hard Drive problem, but nearly every Drive will make some sort of noise, so unless it's clicking (Clicking = bad), I wouldn't spend time looking at that right now. My advice would be to open up the case, then turn the system on and make sure all your fans are spinning and try to pinpoint the sound. If there's a lot of dust inside, it's easy to get rid of. First, turn off the system, then (preferably using canned air from Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc.) just blow out as much as you can. You won't hurt anything inside with the air, so don't be afraid to get into the corners. That's a start and will help to clear up some of the basic trouble-shooting if the problem persists.

Grinding... all I can think of are the fans and HDD. Fans shouldn't cause freezing... (unless they're severely clogged)... I'm looking into the HDD...
Open up the case and listen closer.
