Default Problem with laptop

I have got ACER Travelmate 4001 LCI. It got affected by virus(Malware). I formatted C:\ to install winXP again. But every time Windows setup is in progress, my laptop turns off itself. I can't understand whats the problem. I have tried setup through oridinal ACER CD & also with many other CDs(Win XP setup) but no avail. Plese help.
Also please tell is it possible to connect a laptop hardisk as a slave to a simple HDD(Desktop computer HDD) as i want to transfer all my data from laptop to HDD(desktop comp.). If not then please tell about anyother possibility?
I request to all my friends on computerforum.com to please help me out from this problem as i am very tense these days (Data in my laptop is really important & i don't have any backup)

do you have a linux live cd around ? just boot from it then after you've loaded the desktop, connect an external USB hard drive (that is if you have one) and transfer data to it

cheers mate hope it helps

first, yes you can connect the laptop's hdd as a slave. The only difference betwin a laptop hdd and a pc hdd you will notice, is the size. I have no ideea why your lap is shutting down while in progres of installing windows. Hook up the lap's hdd to a pc and install windows on it using the pc. After you do that hook it back to the laptop.
