Default P4 HT ram question

Hello,
I just bought a toshiba laptop. It's a satellite p35-s629. The salesman at the store was telling me how HT technology requires to sticks of ram that are identical to eachother to take advantage of HT (e.g. 256x2). The laptop has 512 and he told me it would be two sticks of 256. Well i decided to upgrade and bought two 512 sticks from him. When I got home to install it there was one 512 already in there and one open slot. So I thought that since he was lying to me about this machine having two 256's that he might also be lying to me about HT requiring two identical sticks.

I say that to say this, I would like to return the two 512 sticks I purchased to get one 1gb stick and use the existing 512 already installed, but would this make the HT technology pointless/useless? should I just stick with two 512 sticks? Thank you for your help.

Joseph
