Default Help with home network.

Hi guys. I'm struggling with my home network. I can't access my dad's comp from mine(and vice versa), nor setup shared printers or file sharing. His pc is running on xp pro, while mine is on xp media center. I used the xp cd network setup thing, but it didn't work, when i go to my network places i can't view the workgroup computers etc etc.

How do I get it to work properly?

You need to have sharing enabled on both computers.

What is the OS??

You can access the internet on both, right?

Here's what you have to do...

go to a folder you would like to share, (it can be any folder) typically go to my computer and there is a shared documents folder....

-right-click on it and go to sharing and security...
-a new window appears...
-select share this folder

now go to permissions and set the permissions you would like (full control, change, read)

that will let you see you're dad's files...

NOTE: you have to do this to both computers
and you will probably have to give a password to connect to his computer when everything is setup....

hope that helps....

Totally wrong!

Wait until the OP has answered my questions and then we can go from there.

My computer is running on Windows XP Media Centre Edition.

My Dad's is running on Windows XP Professional, sp2.

Both PC's can access the net.

If you're wondering how the network is configured in terms of hardware, it's this.

Modem>Switch>Dad's computer/My switch>My computer/Xbox.

If your network consists of computers in 2 different rooms then it should go Modem>router/switch>dads computer, then a cable going from router/switch to your room into a switch which disperses to computer and xbox. Are you sure each pc has the same workgroup name? have you ran network setup wizard on both machines and allowed printer and file sharing?

I have ran the cd on both machines, allowed file/printer sharing. I also fixed up that diagram, It didn't show it the way I wanted it to.

Nothing comes up when I go to workgroup, nor can I see anything in "My Network Places".
