Default Electro Static Discharge

Is there any information posted in these forums on the damage Electro Static Discharge can cause to computer components? I know it is a common cause of component failure.

If there isn't any information posted I can post some useful information for all who don't know or are learning about the potential damage Electro Static Discharge can cause.

Yes it can destroy components, however if you take some general precautions it's very easy to avoid it. For one, make sure you ground yourself when you're working on components, even simply touching the computer case will work.

yeah unless you dive right into your computer without even touching it then your fine. since your case is connected to your motherboard, your motherboard to your PSU and your PSU to a Ground wire, you ground yourself by touching your case.

i dont think i would call it a "common" cause of component failure. just touch your computer case to discharge, and dont rub your feet on the carpet and you will be fine.

I've heard otherwise. New style PSU's cannot discharge you like the old AT PSUs do.

Either way, just don't go rubbing computer parts or such, and you'll be fine. I've built plenty of computer without discharging (although I recommend you do so).

Well you shouldn't have the PSU connected to the outlet when working on it anyways, so thats not really relevant.

you see, i sometimes work on my pc when its plugged in still, i just flip the on/off switch on the PSU. i was told that this kept the case grounded still.

i have an antec earthwatts, when i flip the switch off my whole case becomes electrified

this is mostly because indians suck at doing a good job of anything so they didnt ground the actual power points in my house hahhhaa

but basically when i turn the switch off, it no longer grounds my system.

anyway while doing anything i pretty much have at least 1 hand touching the case most of the time.
