Its been a while since ive had any major problems, i have been running vista ultimate smoothly, built up my games collection, got myself a lot of music and of course havent bothered to back anythng up
![]() so last night i got bored of using vmware so i thought id dual boot ubuntu 8.04 and vista. now i usually have trouble using the partitioner that comes with ubuntu, i have gparted on cd so i booted up and used that, which is what i usually use for partitioning. I stupidly decided to shrink the main one by 8 gig, then make that a partition, then shrink another 2 gig, and make another partition for the swap file. That wasnt really the problem though. usually this procedure takes like 10 - 20 minutes to complete. today the first resize took about 2 hours. Partitioning the unused space took 2 minutes. I thought this was way too long for it to be normal. but i continued to do the second resize. i left this one for probably about 3 hours, when i came back it said 1 hour and 30 minutes to go.then it was bed time, so i left it and went to sleep. woke up randomly at 2 am so i decided to check if it was done. IT WASNT. haha, now it said 4 hours still to go. so it obviously wasnt working properly. i canceled it and in doing so stuffed up the main partition. so when i tried to boot up it couldnt find the proper files. i repaired using the vista disk, and now it boots up all the way till its about to load into windows, but never leaves the black screen. you know just after the splash screen? when your mouse first shows? thats where it is now. eventually the screen saver comes on hahaha. in short. 1. partitioning failed, stuffing up the partition it was changing. 2. i tried to repair using vista disk. 3. wont work. get the black screen just before it is supposed to boot into windows. what do i do? if i boot up ubuntu livecd should i be able to backup most of my data? or is there some way i can repair it? thankyou
