Default new laptop help

Ok, I just got a new laptop for graduation. It is an HP Pavilion dv9000.

17'' screen, 4GB RAM, intel core 2 duo 1.83ghz and a 512mb geforce 8600

here is the problem, whenever I use the little touch bars at the top of the keyboard to adjust the volume, the grey HP quickplay-style volume box comes up and i get unbelievable lag. Is this a common bug in HP computers? This laptop runs amazing however it can't handle when i adjust the volume........ i looked around and couldnt find an option to disable the volume box from popping up. because sometimes it doesnt come up and the volume adjusts just fine. But for example, I was playing counter strike 1.6, and tried to adjust the volume and sat there and listened to the same sound over and over for like a minute while the screen was totally still. Then when the volume box went away i got the lost connection thing etc.

does anybody know how to fix this? the only option I could find was one to change what sound was played when i adjusted the volume...... no way to disable the big grey volume bar/box/image thing from popping up.

sorry if that was confusing

thanks
