Default No downloads working?

So one of my friends laptops died. I've not checked it out personally, but I've been asked to bring a spare desktop as backup while the laptop's out of service. I took an old computer I knew worked (minus the bad HD which was replaced) and reloaded Windows on it. Everything works fine except for networking...

I've not tested wired networking, but for some reason, all downloads just plain won't work. They either won't start or will freeze around 1.5MB. No errors or anything. This happens with HTML and FTP downloads, even over my local FTP server. I've got nothing else loaded on the machine, and the Windows firewall has been disabled. I tried the newest and oldest drivers, with with the same results...

This motherboard has a few minor issues with the power button, so maybe something is on its way out. I'm about to try the wireless card in another similar machine and see if it's card or computer related.

Skype and Open Office. Turns out it was motherboard related. I'm not quite sure what, but the card works fine in another computer (actually using the same HD!) Perhaps a PCI setting in the bios got changed/reset while it set in my closet... All I know is it worked when I stuck it in there, minus the failing hard drive...

I'll probably just strip the old computer out and loan out this slightly newer one.
