Hey all, first post,
I just finished my first proper build (Not the first time installing most components in computers but first time going from scratch) Components are: Asus P5KC motherboard Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Processor 2 x 1GB Corsair 800MHz DDR2 Nvidia 9600GT graphics card SmartWrite DVD burner maxtor 200GB SATA drive 80GB IDE HDD (Can't remember brand but its a decent one) 400W Excel Power supply, this is old! The motherboards power LED is on when power is connected, but when I press the on button (Well when I emulate pressing the on button by crossing the wires that go to the power jumper on the motherboard) nothing happens, no fans either in the power supply or on the motherboard, no nothing. Any ideas? Cheers, The dr Edit: Righto, disconnected everything except MB and processor + CPU fan. Upon startup, CPU fan gave a few spins (literally must have been a split seconds burst of power) then stopped. Power supply? Cheers Last edited by WitchDr; 06-05-2008 at 03:40 PM. Reason: New info |

Power supply or something shorted on the case would be my first two guesses... Try removing everything and working with maybe only the processor(with fan, of course) and motherboard. Maybe even try it outside the case. If it works there, start putting things back together, constantly testing it.

That sounds like the PSU is at fault. It either shorted or just blew. Go for a new one of a good brand such as Corsair or Enermax, there's absolutely no point in skimping on the PSU.

Make sure all the Power things are connected to the motherboard and that there are the screws in the motherboard where needed and that the motherboard isn't shorting out... this is most of the time a common problem.
