I've heard that from two people now. I want to keep the computer upgradable, which is why I went with a X38 mobo that has PCIe 2.0 and DDR3. Will DDR2 still be a viable option in 3-5 years, or will it be left in the dust by advances in DDR3 forcing me to buy a totally new mobo at the time when I want to upgrade?

Also, is it worse then DDR2 ram at this point in time?

Get DDR2 RAM. Also don't get intel Mobo, their overability is not as good as some other brand.
