Dual Core Processing To Revolutionize Computing?

let me hear your thoughts on the new Pentium dual core line and the new AMD dual core line. I would like to also bring up the fact that the Intel Pentium Dual Core Extreme Edition comes with hyperthreading, which means 4 logical processors. Yes, I said 4 logical procesors. Please pick your jaws up off the floor it's embarrasing.

It will take some time before that becomes the standard. As to the usage of it for my needs....well....not really needed. Therefore, Iit is a nice development but does not make me as excited as you

That's only an advantage when you need four logical cores. Most of the time I don't even use my two hyperthreaded cores to their full potential.

Me neither, maybe in the future but for now people at home will not really need 4 core processors at this moment. Although it's something to look forward to when more demanded programs come out.

However it would have helped me out during my discertation in genomics and the human genome center. Running 10^9 reg expressions took ages.

Do you think that this type of dual core processor will actually increase the performance, I don't think so, they will have to speed up the Hard Disks first in order to make good use of this huge processing power..

In my opinion, normal users, don't need all this processing power, for myself, I need a faster storage unit which MUST be as durable as possible. I think that electronic storage units (Like ROMs) need more research than processors. Imagine that you are having an electronic Hard Disk with the ability to store the data inside it without any friction, imagine the lifetime of such a Hard Disk and the speed as well. Your Hard disk can have a speed which equals your RAM speed, this would be a real revolution.

how do flash cards compare to hdds, i'm considering putting xp on a flash card, see how fast i can get it to boot

Indeed but many of the programs that do benifit from multicore environments have RAM as the operating bottleneck (i.e., modelling, encoding).
