Default Quick Business Question

I have a quick question. If I wanted to run a sole proprietor company under my own name, do I have to file and registration forms or anything with the Government? I'm in the US.

If your selling on eBay, then no, but if its a physical building or website, then yes.

What type of business are you opening?

As a Sole Proprietor, all the IRS needs is a 1040 Schedule C attached to your personal tax return. If you're operating a business under Fedreal regulation, you'll obviously need to register with the appropriate agency. If you sell any products that require tax collecton, such as a sales tax, then you will need to create an account with that collection agency. In California, the sales tax is collected by the Board of Equalization.

You'll probably need a general business license within the city you plan to do business, and you may need to file a Fictitious Business Name statement with the county. If you plan to have employees, you can request an Employer Indentification Number from the IRS, but, as a Sole Proprietor, you can simply use your Social Security Number. I'd recommend outsourcing your payroll to a company like ADP or PayChex.

I can't think of any other paperwork you need to file, unless you're selling or transporting something under regulation. It's actually really easy to start a business. Making money is the hard part.

Hope that helps.
