i recently got the urge to finally upgrade my computer because of how long it takes to launch and close applications on my 5 year old desktop. I am rather happy with the computer itself, other than that I would like to have just a bit more kick than it does. I mobo that i currently have is a dell computer corp. 02y832, for those techies for whom this might actually help, the chipset is Intel i865G
some more specs of the mobo: Architecture : HUB Manufacturer : Intel (Dell Computer Corp) Codename : Springdale Revision : A2 Bus Speed : 133 MHz FSB Frequency : 532 MHz (QDR) PAT Enabled : Unspecified FSB max. Support : 800 MHz and the processor i currently have is a Northwood Core: General Information : Real Frequency : 2394.01 MHz Multiplier : 18x Low/High Multiplier : 18x / 18x Multiplier Locked : Yes Marketing Frequency : 2400.12 MHz Front Side Bus Information : Bus Speed : 133 MHz FSB Frequency : 532 MHz (QDR) Initial Frequencies : Frequency : 2400 MHz Bus Speed : 133.34 MHz (QDR) Multiplier : 18x I was thinking of making a small investment of about 100 bucks into a 3.2 Ghz Hyper-threaded, 800fsb processor. I know that there is a Northwood and a Prescott, whose only difference is CacheL2 size, 512kb, and 1mb respectively. mainly what i'm wondering is A) will i have any problem with upgrading it, core structure/Cache wise. B) perhaps what i need to look for in order to have a compatible processor. just for reference, these are the two processors I'm looking at: http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-P4-3-2GHz-...QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-P4-3-2E-3-...QQcmdZViewItem |

Both will drop right in. Go for the Prescott.
Be sure to clean the old thermal paste off the heatsink and apply a new layer on the processor. I don't think there will be any heat issues from re-using the original heatsink but you may notice the fan making a little more noise. The motherboard will spin the fan a little faster because of the difference in heat between the processors. If the system starts shutting down when you lean on the processor, then you may want to replace the fan with a more powerful (higher RPM) unit. |
